DCJS#11-4610 What is Electronic Access Control ?

Electronic lock

Electronic Access Control is a system that provides a means of restricting and monitoring the flow of traffic in a building or on property through the use of electrical devices. Typically, companies that provide Electronic Access Control will focus on the word Electronic. Here at Meador & Co. we focus on Access Control. We have been providing many forms of Access Control for more than 60 years, and Electronics is just one of the types that we offer.

The first and possibly the most important part of Electronic Access Control is the locking device itself. This is the part of the system that is going to provide the physical security. There are three types of locking devices commonly used in these systems:

  • Electronic Locks
  • Electronic Strikes
  • Magnet or Mag Lock

Keep in mind that none of these components are designed to completely replace the traditional keys and locks but to add security and convenience. Any of these components should be coupled with a good High Security lock system to get the most from your Access Control System.

Next, we have your entry and exit control devices. Some devices like the Mag lock require release devices from the inside of the door. You can choose from touch sensitive push bars and plates, motion detectors, or push buttons. These systems can also be programmed to unlock during scheduled times during the day and week. To open the door during the time that the doors are locked, the system needs an entry device.

There are four main types of these :

  • Biometric
  • Key Pad
  • Key Switch
  • Prox Card

Electronic Access Control systems can be designed to function in a way that meet all of your needs and can also be integrated to other security systems. Meador & Co. can advise, design, sale, install, and repair your access control system, and can also maintain or upgrade your system.

Note: In the state of Virginia, all companies involved in the sales, repairs, or installation of Electronic Security Devices legally must be licensed through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice.
